Global Issues Classes

      • “The world is forever changing; we need to adapt, change, engage, and evolve along with it, or risk being left behind as merely spectators rather than participants…”

      • How is Japan a part of Global Issues? What influence do Global Issues have on this prosperous country? Is Japan a self-sufficient island country or greatly dependent upon globalisation for a more prosperous future for its people and the world at large? Will Japan continue to grow without immigration, with a low birth-rate, and a falling population, and will robots save the day?

        With populism on the rise, and globalization, immigration and the free movement of people under attack, how will the growing world economy fare? Is Brexit the first domino to fall in a European Union breakup and the collapse of the euro? Does President Trump intend further protectionism, isolation and the building of walls, or will he come to his senses and realize the US needs the world as much as the world needs the US?

        How are the giant growing economies of the developing world changing the world at large? Geopolitical upheaval is taking place as China, India, Africa, Indonesia, and South America continue to develop. They too wish to enjoy the fruits of their growth. They too wish to influence world politics. They too would like a greater say at the United Nations, World Bank and IMF. How are we to adapt as they become major players in the world economy?

        What will Russia’s Putin get up to after Ukraine and Syria? Did he influence the US Presidential election? Is Trump an inadvertent ally of Putin? How does Russia’s behaviour influence the European Union and its economy? How should NATO respond, and will Trump support NATO? Does Russia enjoy being out in the cold or does it truly wish to be a part of an ever greater connected political, economic, and democratic world? His support for Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela would suggest the former.

        Science and technology are progressing at an ever-faster pace, creating unbelievable products: providing deep understanding and solutions to many of humanity’s challenges, from global warming and feeding a rising population, to creating clean energy systems and delivering health care to places once thought hopeless. Will AI and Big Data prove a blessing for humanity, or a threat?

■ 世界を読み解き、知性を磨く「大人のための中級英会話」
「予習」があるから、自信を持って発言できる
次回の記事を事前にお渡しします。語彙を調べ、内容を把握した上でレッスンに臨めるため、語彙力に自信がない方でも、落ち着いて議論に参加できます。
「伝えるため」の発音・リズムを矯正
単に話すだけでなく、相手に伝わる「正しい発音、ストレス（強弱）、イントネーション（抑揚）」を丁寧に指導。通じる英語から「洗練された英語」へのステップアップを目指します。
段落ごとの精読と、深い対話
一文一文の理解を大切にし、内容が今の世界や自分自身とどう繋がっているかを議論します。
ユーモア溢れる、知的な交流の場
クラスは常に明るく、ユーモアに満ちています。「Knowledge is power（知識は力なり）」を合言葉に、幅広い年齢・職業の受講生が、互いの視点を共有し、知性を高め合っています。

[Class Philosophy]
毎週の記事を単なる教材ではなく「世界への扉」として扱い、語彙力・読解力・発信力を三位一体で高めます。発音の細部から、国際情勢の深い洞察まで、知的好奇心を満たす105分間をお約束します。

Wednesday Morning Class Description

      • Each week students take home a news article written by some of the most eminent writers in their fields. This gives them the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the topic before the next class, and to study and build up their vocabulary. Students are encouraged to take notes and, week by week, to gradually build up an extensive, comprehensive, vocabulary list. As time goes by they find themselves repeatedly encountering previously studied vocabulary and begin to remember and incorporate it into their questions and discussions, thus compounding their knowledge and their ability to communicate their thoughts on an ever expanding range of topics.
      • During the class, students practice their speaking abilities, with emphasis placed upon good pronunciation, word stress, sentence stress, sentence rhythm, and intonation – always bearing in mind that the purpose of speech is to help the listener to understand the speaker as clearly as possible.
      • After reading each paragraph, students have the opportunity to ask questions to ensure full understanding of the paragraph. They also discuss its contents and how those contents may relate to the world around them, past, present, and future, and also to them individually or their country as a whole.
      • Once the article is complete students have a final opportunity to ask questions, discuss the issues, and to make closing comments.
      • The classes have a pleasant atmosphere, they are humorous and light-hearted. The focus is on the pleasure of learning and understanding.
      • There are a wide range of students in the classes of various ages. Students are male and female, professional and non-professional.

    • 英字新聞を読んで、日本では報道されない世界情勢を知りたい。日本のメディアにはない切り口で書かれた記事を読んでみたいが、一人で読むのは自信がない。そんな初級の方向けに、The Economist等の記事を題材にしながら、丁寧にそして徹底的に文構造・文法・内容の解説を行なっていきます。どんな記事も読める読解力を習得します。
